Bankart lesion is a defect in the shoulder which is caused by dislocation of the shoulder. It can be caused by single time this location or multiple dislocations. There can be a soft tissue Bankart lesion or Bony Bankart lesion. The soft tissue Bankart lesion consist of labrum tear at the anterior and inferior border of the glenoid. The Bankart lesion is caused by the humeral head dislocating anteriorly and impinging on the antero-inferior border of glenoid. At the same time the Head of humerus gets impinged by the glenoid and gets a defect on the posterior and superior aspect,results in a Hill-Sachs lesion.
Good health of the shoulder muscles which comprises of deltoid, and mainly the rotator cuff muscles usually keeps the biomechanics of shoulder in good state. Good tone of the muscles his important to prevent shoulder dislocation and hence to prevent Bankart lesion. Some people with congenital laxity or with history of convulsions or fits/epilepsy usually have the history of recurrent shoulder dislocation resulting in Bankart and Hill Sachs Lesion.
